Frequently asked questions

General questions on Feliway® and Pheromones

What pheromone is in Feliway?

The pheromone released by Feliway is the synthetic copy of the facial pheromone that cats leave naturally by rubbing their cheek against an object or people when they are feeling comfortable in their environment.

What pheromone is in Feliway MultiCat?

The pheromone released by Feliway MultiCat is the synthetic copy of the natural comforting pheromone released from the mother cat's mammary area during the nursing period. This appeasing pheromone helps maintain the bond between the kittens and their mother and helps kittens feel safe and secure.

The scientific team at Ceva has found that this pheromone can help reduce tension and conflict between cats in the home.

Will Feliway or Feliway MultiCat affect humans or other animals in my home?

No. Pheromones are species-specific and will only be detected by other cats in the home.  Cats of all ages detect these pheromones throughout life.

Can I use Feliway or Feliway MultiCat with a young kitten?

Yes. There is no minimum age for using Feliway pheromones. Kittens are able to perceive pheromones in the environment and respond accordingly.

Can I use Feliway, Feliway MultiCat, and Adaptil® pheromones in the same household at the same time?

Yes, the pheromones in each product are species-specific; the feline facial pheromone (Feliway) or the feline appeasing pheromone (Feliway MultiCat) is detected only by cats and the dog appeasing pheromone (Adaptil®) is detected only by dogs.

How long should I use Feliway or Feliway MultiCat?

It depends on the nature and the extent of the reason you are using the product. The minimum recommended duration for most situations is 1 month. But some situations may benefit from permanent use.

What type of behavior problems will not be helped by Feliway pheromones?

1.  If your cat has an underlying medical condition.  It is always best to consult your veterinarian to rule out medical conditions before starting Feliway pheromones.

2.  Behaviors that are not stress-related. Some cats may just be natural introverts.

3.  Aggression towards people.  Seek advice from a qualified veterinary behaviorist before using Feliway pheromones.

What type of behavior problems may not be helped by Feliway MultiCat?

Feliway MultiCat has been tested in households where there is tension and conflict between cats.

If there are marking behaviors in the home (urine spraying, scratching), we recommend using regular Feliway pheromones. If you have both conflict and marking behaviors, you can use both Feliway and Feliway MultiCat in the same room.  We recommend placing the Feliway (and/or Feliway MultiCat) in the room where the cats spend the most time.

Some environmental modifications might also be considered (such as providing more choice for litter boxes) to avoid competition between cats and lack of easy access to the box for each cat.  For more information, review these resources from AAFP:  House-Soiling, Your Cat's Environmental Needs.

Note also that Feliway Multicat has not been tested for aggression toward the owner(s). In this situation, consulting your veterinarian or a behaviorist is strongly recommended.

What's the best way to clean up urine marking within the home?

The urine marks should be cleaned as soon as possible.  We recommend using Urine Away™ to completely remove odor and stain.

Once the area is cleaned. Feliway spray can then be sprayed onto the area to help reduce the likelihood of urine marking recurring. Never use ammonia-based cleaners, bleach, or cleaning products with a strong smell to remove urine marks, because that will attract cats back to the same locations.

Using Feliway® and Feliway® MultiCat Diffusers

Where should I plug in Feliway diffuser?

You should plug a Feliway diffuser in the room where the cat(s) spend most of their time. A diffuser covers an area up to 700 sq. ft..  Do NOT place the diffuser behind a door or furniture or directly below pictures. More than one diffuser may be required in large or multi-floor homes, or if more than one room is affected by marking behaviors.

Where should I plug in Feliway MultiCat diffuser?

You should plug Feliway MultiCat diffuser in the room where the cats spend most of their time. A diffuser covers an area up to 700 sq ft..  Do NOT place the diffuser behind a door, behind furniture or immediately under objects (such as pictures).  More than one diffuser may be required in large or multi-floor homes, or if conflicts occur in more than one area.

Why shouldn't I plug in a Feliway or Feliway MultiCat diffuser behind furniture?

The oily vapor (carrying the pheromone) will rise in a column of warm air above the device. If this rising air is blocked (e.g., under a shelf, table or behind furniture), the oil may re-condense and leave a visible mark. Circulation of pheromone will be impaired, and the efficacy of the product may be compromised.

Should the Feliway diffuser be placed near the litter box (especially for a urine-spraying issue)?

For any indication, the diffuser should be placed in the room where the cat spends most of its time. Since cats rarely spend most of their time in the litter box, there is no reason to use the diffuser close to it (or spray Feliway on the box). In addition, cats don’t rub around the litter box, so they may be surprised to find facial pheromone right on the box. However, there is no contra-indication to plugging the diffuser in the room where a litter box is located particularly if this room is big and the cat spends a lot of time in it.  In this situation, plug in the diffuser away from the litter box.

Will the Feliway diffuser keep my cat from using the litter box if it’s in the same room?

No, the pheromone in Feliway will not prevent your cat from using its litter box.

However, the diffuser should be placed in the area of your home where the cat spends most of its time.  This may or may not be the room where the litter box is.

Should I unplug Feliway or Feliway MultiCat diffuser at night?

No -- the diffuser should be plugged in continuously day and night. Frequent unplugging may prevent the diffuser from working properly. Efficacy was demonstrated in clinical trials with non-interrupted use of the diffuser allowing the cat to constantly perceive the pheromone’s signal. Furthermore, cats are awake and active even at nocturnal times.

How long does the diffuser last?

The diffuser should be checked monthly and replaced every six months to ensure optimum effect.

30 day refill vials are available for the diffuser.

How long do the refills last?

Refill vials last for 30 days and cover an area up to 700 sq. feet.  The diffuser (the electrical unit) should be checked monthly and replaced every six months.

It's important to replace the refill after 30 days, even if there is a small amount of liquid in the vial.  The wick doesn't completely touch the bottom and rarely does it completely empty. Use the sticker on the refill vial to mark your calendar when it is time to change your refill.

Why isn’t the level of liquid in my Feliway or Feliway MultiCat diffuser going down?

The diffusion of the liquid from the Feliway or Feliway MultiCat Diffuser is a very slow process. In normal conditions of use, it can be very difficult to see any change to the level in the device over the first week of use. Slight variations will occur depending on air turnover. To make sure your diffuser is working properly, check that the wick on the refill vial is not broken and that the diffuser is plugged into a working outlet.

How long before the diffuser spreads Feliway or Feliway MultiCat throughout the area?

We recommend allowing several hours (ideally 24) for the diffuser to be fully functional. This allows the wick to become fully impregnated and for Feliway or Feliway MultiCat pheromones to saturate a room. However, for stressful events that can be anticipated, plug in the Feliway diffuser 2-3 days before the event for best results.

How long should it take to see an effect on my cat(s) with Feliway pheromones?

The effect of Feliway or Feliway MultiCat on a cat will depend on the nature, extent and duration of the problem for which the product is used. Clinical trials have proven that signs of improvement (such as reduction in urine spraying and scratching; or tension/conflict with Feliway MultiCat) can be seen within the first week of use, with further improvement occurring during the following weeks. For optimum benefit, we recommend continued use of Feliway pheromones for at least one month.  Some cat households might benefit from permanent use of a Feliway diffuser.

Depending on the situation, your cat(s) may need additional modifications such as environmental changes.  For more advice, ask your veterinarian or see the resources on AAFP.

Can I plug Feliway or Feliway MultiCat diffuser in a room where there are caged birds?

Some caged birds are known to have sensitive respiratory systems (in particular Psittacines: parrots, budgerigar, etc.). Therefore, as a precaution, we recommend plugging the diffuser in a different room.

Can I plug a Feliway diffuser in a room with an aquarium?

If the cat spends most of its time in the room with the aquarium, we recommend using an outlet as far from the aquarium as possible. This is only a precaution to avoid oily, diffused ingredients settling on the surface of the water.

What is the surface area covered by a Feliway or a Feliway MultiCat diffuser (in particular for a multi-level house?)

One diffuser covers up to 700 sq ft. The recommendation is to plug the diffuser in the room most frequented by the cat(s). However, in a multi-level house, one diffuser located in a specific area of the home may not be enough to produce the desired effects in cats, particularly in rooms that are located on another level. Therefore, for a multi-level house, it may be more appropriate to use one diffuser per level for best results.

Do the Feliway diffuser refills fit other brands of diffuser systems?

No. The Feliway refills should never be used with another brand of a diffuser device nor the Feliway diffuser with a different brand of refill. The pheromone technology is designed to work at a certain temperature that is specific to our diffusers.

I bought a diffuser in another country, or online, and it doesn’t match with the local sockets of my country. What can I do?

Feliway diffusers are made for local electric systems of the country they have been bought from. NEVER use a U.S. diffuser in another country, due to the voltage difference. Diffusers should never be used with an adapter or a voltage converter as it may lead to serious safety issues. Please check before use that your diffuser has the appropriate plug to be used in your country.

Are the Feliway refills recyclable?

No, the refill vials are not recyclable at this time.

Do I need to change the diffuser refill even though the liquid has not completely run out?

The refill vial will never empty completely, as the last few milliliters of liquid are not sufficiently in contact with the wick to allow the diffusion process.  It is recommended to replace the refill after four weeks, with our without a small amount of liquid remaining in the refill.

I'm pregnant. Can I use a diffuser? Should I stop using it?

You may continue using your diffuser.  According to toxicological data on the components of our products, no particular risk is expected following inhalation of the pheromone products when used as recommended.

Can I use the diffuser in a room with air-conditioning?

Yes, a diffuser can be used in a house (or a vet clinic) where there is an air-conditioner, provided that it is not plugged in near the air-conditioner, vents, cold air returns, or exhaust fans.

Being near additional air-flow may accelerate the diffusion process and the refill vial may not last a full 30 days.

How can I tell if my diffuser is turned on or working?

When the diffuser is plugged into a working outlet, the diffuser head will be warm to the touch.

Can I use the diffuser while leaving the windows open, particularly in the summer? Will that affect the efficacy?

Usage with open windows or heavy air flow may result in diffusion at a faster rate. The product may not last the full expected 30 days. In such a case, a different diffuser location should be considered within the house, targeting the area where the cat(s) spends most of its time. Alternatively, you can use the Feliway Spray or Wipe products.

Using Feliway® Spray

How do I use Feliway Spray?

Spray 8 to 10 pumps of Feliway 15 minutes before the cat is introduced into the sprayed environment (car, carrier, bedding, table for medical examination, etc.). Effects last approximately 4 to 5 hours.  Re-apply as needed or if you notice a reduced effect.

Feliway Spray can be applied directly on bedding, inside the carrier, or in the car, but be sure to apply without the cat in the area to be sprayed (particularly inside the carrier).

Feliway Spray should not be sprayed directly on animals or near an animal’s face.

Can Feliway Spray be used directly on the cat?

No, Feliway should never be sprayed directly on a cat.

How long will it take to have an effect on the cat? How long will the effect last?

Feliway spray has been proven to have an almost immediate effect, lasting 4 to 5 hours. Re-apply as needed according to the situation for which the Feliway spray is used. Please remember to allow the object which has been sprayed (cushion, carrier…) to dry for at least 15 minutes for the alcoholic solvent to evaporate, before introducing the cat to the area.

If I have a long journey with my cat, how often should I use Feliway Spray?

The effects of Feliway last 4 to 5 hours, so if the journey is longer than this you will need to re-spray.  If you can't remove the cat from the carrier, use a blanket or towel in the carrier - remove this and spray it - allowing 15 minutes for the alcohol to evaporate before putting it back in the carrier.

Another option to reduce stress is to spray a towel with Feliway and place it over the carrier.  In addition to exposing your cat to Feliway pheromones, the towel also blocks the unfamiliar sights that may be upsetting your cat.

Will Feliway reduce motion sickness during travel?

Feliway spray has been clinically proven* to improve signs of stress-related behaviors due to travel such as vomiting, urination, defecation. panting, meowing, agitation and salivation.  But, Feliway is not proven to help reduce motion sickness.

If your cat experiences motion sickness, please ask your veterinarian for advice.

Should I spray Feliway on a scratching post to encourage my cat to use it?

No, Feliway should not be sprayed where you WANT your cat to scratch (for example on a scratching post). It should be applied to areas that you do NOT want your cat to scratch (such as furniture: sofa, chair, doors…). By providing reassurance and comfort to them, Feliway will help prevent cats from scratching those objects again.

Is the Feliway spray bottle recyclable?

Yes. The pheromone spray bottles are made of either glass or recyclable plastic material.
