Learn about FELIWAY Diffuser

How does it work?

FELIWAY is a synthetic copy of the Feline Facial Pheromone. This is the pheromone that cats leave naturally when they feel safe and secure in their environment.

FELIWAY helps to reduce signs of stress such as urine spraying, scratching or hiding.

How fast will I see results?

A lot of cat owners start to see results within the first 7 days with their cat.
However, every cat is unique. Depending on how long the signs have been present and how severe the signs may be, it may take longer to see effects. We recommend using FELIWAY for at least one month.

How long should I use it?

Most of the cats will benefit from a permanent use of FELIWAY to create a happy environment in your home. The minimum recommended duration is one month. Many cats will benefit from permanent use.

When should I use it?

  • If your cat shows signs of stress such as urine spraying, scratching walls or furniture
  • If your cat shows signs of discomfort such as hiding, reduced activity, reduced appetite or over grooming
  • If you anticipate changes in your home, e.g moving home, renovations, redecorating, arrival of a new pet or family member, or visitors to the home

Where should I use it?

  • In the room or rooms where the cat spends most of its time
  • Or in every room where scratching or urine spraying occurs

Where should I NOT use it?

  • Hallways: Cats spend very little of their time in hallways, so only use if the hallway is where scratching or urine making often occurs
  • Near litter box: It is uncommon for cats to spend a lot of time in the litter box. If the litter box is in the same room where your cat spends most of its time, it will not prevent your cat from using its litter box

When should I NOT use it?

  • If your cat has no access to a clean litter tray or training to use it, it will pee in your home, and FELIWAY may not help
  • If your cat has no access to a scratching post, it will scratch your walls or furniture and FELIWAY will not help.
  • It is important to consult a veterinarian to rule out potential medical issues in your cat. If your cat is peeing, hiding or eating less for medical reasons, FELIWAY will not help.
  • FELIWAY will not help in cases of tension or even aggression towards owners. In these situations, we recommend consulting your veterinarian or a behaviourist.

Use our FELIWAY Diffusers

Where should I plug it in?

  • In an electrical socket with a minimum clear distance above the diffuser of 1.20 M (4 ft)
(The oily vapour carrying FELIWAY rises in a column of warm air above the diffusers)

Where NOT to plug it in?

  • To avoid blocking the diffusion, do not plug:
    • behind a door
    • underneath or behind furniture
    • in any socket without 1.20 M (4 ft) clear above it
  • In a powerboard
  • With an adaptor
  • With an extension cord

How many do I need?

One Diffuser covers an area up to 70m².
You may require several Diffusers for a large home, or for a multi-story home.

How long will it last?

  • One Refill vial lasts up to 30 days
It is recommended to replace the Refill every 4 weeks, even if a small amount of liquid remains in the vial
  • One Diffuser plug lasts 6 months. Renew the Diffuser every six months to ensure optimum effect

How fast will it work?

You should plug in the Diffuser 2-3 days before to ensure enough time for the Diffuser to heat up, fill the room with pheromones and help keep you cat calm in times of anticipated changes.

Should I plug at night?

Don't unplug or switch off the Diffuser at night. The Diffuser is designed to be left on all the time.

Switching the Diffuser on and off may lead to the wick crystallising which may cause the product to stop working.

Is it compatible with other systems?

  • FELIWAY Refills should never be used with another plug-in device such as an air freshener or insect repeller.
  • FELIWAY Diffusers are unique and specifically manufactured for compatibility. FELIWAY Refills should never be used with a different Diffuser, such as those used for air fresheners for example, and conversely, only FELIWAY Refills should be used in the FELIWAY Diffuser.
  • FELIWAY Diffusers come with a plug that fits with the local electric systems of the country they have been bought from. They cannot be used in a country with another voltage. They should never be used with an adapter or a voltage converter as it may lead to serious safety issues. Please check before use that your Diffuser has the appropriate plug to be used in your country.

Can I recycle it?

The Refill vial is made from recyclable plastic materials (PET). The Refill cap is made from polyethylene (PE). These are generally recyclable materials but please check with your local recycling provider as to whether  these materials are acceptable for recycling.

Where is the use by date?

The Refill vial has an expiry date printed on the side of the label.  We recommend to replace the electric Diffuser plug after 6 months of continuous use.

Resolve FELIWAY Diffuser issues

How do I know if my Diffuser is working?

When plugged into a socket and switched on the Diffuser will be warm to touch, indicating it is working properly.

The Diffuser is warm

The Diffuser contains a heating element that diffuses the product, so it is designed to be warm to touch.

The level of liquid is not going down

The diffusion of the liquid from the Diffuser is a very slow process. In normal conditions of use, it is difficult to see any change in the vial over the first week of use. Slight variations will occur depending on environmental conditions.

To make sure your Diffuser is working properly, check that:

  • the wick is not broken
  • the wall switch is switched on
  • the device is  turned on all the time (sometimes an electrical outlet is controlled by a wall switch)
  • finally, try the device in a different electrical socket

Visible mark on your wall or furniture

The pheromone is contained in an oily carrier which rises in a column of warm air above the Diffuser. If this rising air is blocked (e.g. under a shelf, table, furniture) the oil may re-condense and leave a visible mark.

Do not plug the Diffuser under any furniture or object protruding from the wall as it needs a clear distance of 1.2 meters.

Can I use the Diffuser in air conditioning?

Be careful to plug the Diffuser away from the air-conditioning units, vents, fans and exhaust fan.

Can I use the Diffuser near open windows?

Usage with open windows and doors may result in diffusion at a faster rate. The product may not last the full expected 30 days. In such a case, a different Diffuser location should be considered within the house, targeting the area where the cat spends most of its time.

FELIWAY safety

For cats and kittens

Trials have been conducted to ensure the FELIWAY products are safe for cats and kittens. Since it was developed, FELIWAY has been used for more than 11 million cats.  There is no minimum age for using FELIWAY, kittens are able to perceive the pheromone released in the environment and will respond accordingly. If you experience any issues please contact your veterarian.

For humans

When used as directed, the pheromones contained in FELIWAY are safe for use around humans. The product may irritate eyes, nose, throat and skin. Avoid inhaling spray. If skin contact occurs wash your skin thoroughly with soap and water. If eye contact occurs wash immediately with water. If irritation persists consult your doctor.

The pheromone used in FELIWAY is specific to cats and cannot be detected by humans. The electric Diffuser plug complies with Australian and New Zealand electrical safety standards. The plastic materials used are self-extinguishing (V2 grade).

When the Diffuser is used continuously, we recommend changing it every 6 months for the best results.

For dogs

The pheromone in FELIWAY is specific to cats and is not detectable by dogs. If you experience any issues please contact your veterarian.

For caged birds

Some caged birds are known to have sensitive respiratory systems (in particular Psittacines: parrots, budgerigar, etc). Therefore, if you are using FELIWAY Diffuser, as a precaution, we recommend plugging in the Diffuser in a different room.

For further recommendations or information, we recommend consulting your veterinarian.

For aquarium fish

The pheromone in FELIWAY is specific to cats and is not detectable by fish.

But as for any in-home Diffuser, if you are using the FELIWAY Diffuser, as a precaution, we recommend plugging in the Diffuser in a different room.

If the cat spends most of their time in the room with the aquarium, we recommend using an outlet as far from the aquarium as possible. This is only a precaution to avoid oily, diffused active ingredients settling on the surface of the water. The components themselves are not classified as toxic for the environment.

Learn about FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY

How does it work?

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY encourages cats to scratch on a desired location, such as a scratching post.

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY is proven to effectively redirect unwanted scratching in the home (displayed on vertical and horizontal surfaces).

How fast will I see results?

Results may be seen as early as 7 days however it is important to finish the full 4 week program. Do not stop even if early results are seen.

How long should I use it?

It’s recommended to use it until the end of the 4 week-period (once daily for 7 days, then 1 pipette at the beginning of week 3 and 1 pipette at the beginning of week 4).

Repeat FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY application daily during the first week to help reinforce the message to the cat and modify their scratching habits. Then, the further weekly applications contribute to maintain the change.

After using FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY,  if no improvement is seen at the end of week 2 (for instance for cats already scratching for a long time), apply in addition FELIWAY Spray on the unwanted scratched areas, after cleaning them with warm water and allowing them to dry. Repeat spray application daily until resolution of scratching.

When should I use it?

  • When adopting a new kitten, to prevent inappropriate scratching in the home due to the change in living environment.
  • When you want to attract your cat to scratch on a scratching post, even if it’s a post your cat has previously ignored
  • When your cat is scratching in unwanted locations in your home, even if it has been so for a very long time, and even if your cat has outdoors access
  • When introducing a new scratching post in the home

Where should I use it?

Apply the products to your cat's scratching post.

Place the post:

  • In a visible area, near a favourite napping location, since cats enjoy a good stretch and scratch after awakening
  • Alternatively, place as close as possible to the item currently scratched inappropriately by the cat

Do not place the post behind furniture or in a corner.

The post should be sturdy and stable (tall enough, at least 1M).

Where should I NOT use it?

  • On the areas where you don’t want your cat to scratch such as furniture, walls and curtains (use FELIWAY Spray on these areas)
  • On a scratching pad placed onto the floor
  • On a scratching pad hidden behind furniture
  • On a unsteady scratching post e.g hung on a door or placed agianst a wall without being attached

When should I NOT use it?

  • If your cat is scratching undesirable locations outside the home, FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY will not help
  • If your cat is scratching in several different places in the home, in this case it is recommended to use a FELIWAY Diffuser in the room where the cat spends most of its time.
  • FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY will not help in cases of scratching/aggression directed towards owners. In such situations, we recommend to consult your veterinarian or a veterinarian behaviourist.

Use FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY

How to apply?

To avoid potential spillage on fabrics, furniture or carpets by placing down your scratching post in a sink or on a newspaper before applying.

Slowly apply the liquid by drawing 2 or 3 lines on the post that will mimic the natural scratch marks left by cats on a scratching post.

Allow to dry for 5 minutes and place the post vertically, preferably close to the area where your cat scratches, or where they usually rest.

You don’t need to apply when your cat is present, FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY is appealing enough to make cats scratch on the post even if applied in the absence of the cat.

How many do I need?

  • If you have 1 cat: provide 1 scratching post treated with FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY
  • If you have 2 or more cats: provide several posts, ideally one per cat, and apply FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY on each of them to encourage cats to use them, at least when introducing them into the home

Will I need to repeat the course?

Repeat the program of FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY when introducing a new scratching post.

Why is my cat licking the product on the scratching post?

A few cats have been reported to lick the post treated with FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY, usually also rubbing their face intensely on the post. This is due to the presence of catnip in the product. Some cats may look very aroused. This has mostly been observed during the first days of use of the product, but should decrease during the next weeks.

There is little risk linked to the oral absorption of a small quantity of product after licking it. However, if you experience any issues please contact your veterarian.

Why is the product coloured?

The product is coloured to mimic the visual marks of cat scratches. The colorant is dark blue in order to be easily visible to the cat, which attracts the cat to the scratching post.

Will the colour stain on my cat's paws?

This has not been reported in our field trials. To prevent possible staining on your cat’s paws, we recommend letting the product dry for 5 minutes before letting your cat scratch on the treated scratching post.

In case of spillage, how can I clean the area?

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY liquid content is washable with paper towel (to absorb) & a wet sponge on many surfaces. However, if splashed on a fabric material, this would need a more specific cleaning (washing machine if possible or use of a cleaning product), as the colorant will have been absorbed by the fabric.

Will the colour disappear after some time?

No the color will not disappear but will fade over time. The blue taint of the product fades progressively after its application on the scratching post. This is the reason why it needs to be reapplied daily for the first days, to repeat the message to the cat. It’s no more visible on cardboard scratching posts after a few days and remains as light blue on rope scratching posts.
