Learn about FELIWAY CLASSIC Diffuser

How does it work?

Cats communicate through natural “happy messages” released from different parts of their body (e.g. the face, mammary area and paws). Scientifically these are known as pheromones.

When comfortable and happy, cats mark their territory as familiar by rubbing their face against corners, furniture, people or other cats at home. By doing that, they release a message. When present in the environment, these “happy messages” provide reassurance to the cats.
When modern life conflicts with their natural needs, cats don’t feel completely comfortable.
They do not release these “happy messages” anymore and can show signs such as spraying, scratching and hiding.

FELIWAY CLASSIC sends “happy messages” to cats and helps make them feel safe and secure at home.
Using feline natural reassuring messages, FELIWAY helps your cat happily adjust to the pace of modern life, encourages happiness and helps prevent signs like spraying, scratching and hiding.

How fast will I see results?

A lot of cat owners will start to see results within the first 7 days.
However, every cat is unique. Depending on how long the signs of stress have been present and their severity, it may take longer to see the effects. We recommend using FELIWAY CLASSIC for at least 1 month.

How long should I use it?

Where to use?

  • In the room where your cats spends most of their time
  • In each room where tension or conflicts happen most often.

  • Hallways: Cats spend very little of their time in hallways, so the efficacy would be weaker.(Except if the hallway is the area where scratching or cat spraying is happening most often)
  • Near the litter box: Cats spend very little of their time near their litter box, so the efficacy would be weaker. (If the litter box is in the same room where your cat spends most of their

When NOT to use ?

  • If your cat has no access to a clean litter tray, it will urinate in your home, and FELIWAY CLASSIC will not help in this scenario.
  • If your cat has no access to a scratching post, it will scratch your walls or furniture instead (because scratching is an essential need of cats), and FELIWAY CLASSIC will not help.
  • If your cat is urinating, hiding or eating less for medical reasons, FELIWAY CLASSIC will not help.  It is important to consult a veterinarian to rule out any potential medical issues.
  • If your cat is showing signs of conflict with another cat living in your home, we recommend using FELIWAY FRIENDS instead
  • FELIWAY will not help in cases of tension or even aggression towards owners. In such situations, we recommend to consult your veterinarian or a behaviourist.

Learn about FELIWAY FRIENDS

How does it work?

FELIWAY FRIENDS sends “harmony messages” to cats and helps restore harmony between cats living together.

Using feline natural appeasing messages, FELIWAY FRIENDS helps your cats live in harmony and avoids tensions, conflicts and fighting.

Resolve FELIWAY Diffuser issues

How to check proper function of the Diffuser?

When plugged into an outlet, the diffuser will get slightly warm, indicating it is working properly.

The diffuser is warm

The diffuser contains a heating element that diffuses the product, so is designed to be warm to the touch.

The level of liquid is not going down

It is going down, but you can’t see it!
The diffusion of the liquid from the Diffuser is a very slow process. In normal conditions of use, it is difficult to see any change in the vial over the first week of use. Slight variations will occur depending on air turnover.
To make sure your diffuser is working properly, check that:
- The wick is not broken
- The device is turned on all the time (sometimes an electrical outlet is controlled by a wall switch)
- Finally, try the device in a different electrical socket.

Visible mark on your wall or furniture

The oily vapour (carrying FELIWAY “messages”) rises in a column of warm air above the diffuser. If this rising air is blocked (E.g. under a shelf, table or furniture) the oil may re-condense and leave a visible mark).
DON’T plug the diffuser under any furniture or object protruding from the wall (minimum clear distance above diffuser is 1.20m).

Diffuser and air conditioning?

Be careful to plug the diffuser away from the air conditioner, vents, cold air returns, or exhaust fans.  This may result in diffusion at a faster rate and the product may not last the full expected 30 days.

Diffuser and open windows?

Usage with open windows and doors may result in diffusion at a faster rate. The product may not last the full expected 30 days. In such a case, a different diffuser location should be considered within the house, targeting the area where the cat spends most of its time.

For caged birds

Some caged birds are known to have sensitive respiratory systems (in particular Psittacines: parrots, budgerigars etc.). Therefore, if you are using a FELIWAY CLASSIC or FELIWAY FRIENDS Diffuser, as a precaution, we recommend plugging in the diffuser in a different room.

For aquarium fish

This is only a precaution to avoid oily, diffused active ingredients settling on the surface of the water. The components themselves are not classified as toxic for the environment.

Learn about FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY

How does it work?

Cats are territorial by nature. They like to feel in control of their territory and have their own way of telling other cats “this is mine”! They scratch in visible places leaving marks and “territory messages” (these come from their paws).

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY sends “territory messages” to cats and encourages them to scratch on your desired location (E.g. on a scratching post).

Using feline natural territorial messages, FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY is a simple answer to your cat’s inappropriate scratching in the home.

How fast will I see results?

From 7 days after the initial daily application. It’s recommended to use until the end of the 4 week period as the benefits continue over weeks.

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY is clinically proven to effectively redirect unwanted scratching in the home (displayed on vertical and horizontal surfaces).

How long should I use it?

We recommended to complete the full 4 week protocol (once daily for 7 days, then 1 pipette at the beginning of week 3 and 1 pipette at the beginning of week 4).

Repeat FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY application daily during the first week to help reinforce the message to the cat and modify their scratching habits. Then, further weekly applications contribute to maintain the change.

After using FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY,  if there is no improvement by the end of week 2 (E.g. when cats have already scratching for a long time), apply (in addition) FELIWAY CLASSIC Spray on the unwanted scratching areas, after cleaning them with warm water and allowing them to dry. Repeat spray application daily until resolution of scratching.

When to use?

  • When adopting a new kitten, to prevent inappropriate scratching in the home due to the change of living environment.
  • When you want to attract your cat to scratch on a scratching post, even if it is a post your cat has previously ignored
  • When your cat is scratching in unwanted locations in your home, even if it has been for a very long time, and even if your cat has outdoor access
  • When stressful changes at home are anticipated
  • When renewing a scratching post or introducing a new post in the home

Where to use?

On your cat’s scratching post:

  • Place the post in a visible area, near a favourite napping location, since cats enjoy a good stretch and scratch after waking up.  Or as close as possible to the item being scratched inappropriately by the cat.
  • Do not place the post behind furniture or in a corner,
  • The post should be sturdy, stable, and tall enough.  As a guide: at least 90 cm tall
  • We recommend using only vertical scratching posts (made of cardboard or rope). Using a vertical post helps communicate the pheromonal message to the cats and encourages them to mark with their claws.

Where NOT to use?

  • On the areas where you don’t want your cat to scratch, like furniture and walls (use FELIWAY CLASSIC Spray on these areas)
  • On a scratching pad put onto the floor
  • On a scratching pad hidden behind furniture
  • On a scratching post not steady enough (E.g. hung on the door or just put against the wall without being attached)

When NOT to use?

  • If your cat is scratching in undesirable locations outside the home, FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY will not help
  • If your cat is scratching in several different places in the home, not always the same, it is probably a sign that your cat is not completely happy.
In this case we recommend to also plug a FELIWAY CLASSIC diffuser in the room where the cat spends most of their time, to provide additional comfort. Begin using FELIWAY CLASSIC diffuser at the same time as FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY, and for at least 1 month.
  • FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY will not help in cases of scratching directed towards owners. In such situations, we recommend to consult your veterinarian or a behaviourist.

Use FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY

How to apply?

To avoid potential spillage on fabrics, furniture or carpets, place your scratching post horizontally on a sink or newspaper as a precaution. Slowly apply the liquid product by drawing 2 or 3 lines on the post that will mimic the natural lacerations left by cats on a scratching post.

Allow to dry for 5 minutes and position the post vertically, preferably close to the area where your cat scratches or where they usually rest.

You do not need to apply when your cat is present, FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY is appealing enough to make cats scratch on the post even if applied in their absence.

How many do I need?

  • If you have 1 cat: Offer 1 scratching post treated with FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY
  • If you have 2 or more cats: Offer several posts, ideally one per cat, and apply FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY on each of them to encourage the cats to use them.

When should I renew application?

  • When introducing a new scratching post to your home
  • When getting your cat a new scratching post
  • When stressful changes at home are anticipated

Why is my cat licking the product on the scratching post?

A few cats have been reported to lick the post when treated with FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY, usually also rubbing their face intensely on the post. This is due to the presence of catnip in the product. Some cats may look very aroused and normally, this is only observed during the first days of use.

There is no risk linked to the oral absorption of a minimal quantity of product after licking.

Why is the product colored?

In order to mimic the visual marks (lacerations) of cat scratches. The colourant is dark blue to be easily visible from far by the cat and attract him to the post (and then promote the detection of the “territory messages”).

Will the color stain on my cat's paws?

This has not been reported in our field trials. To prevent any chance for possible staining on your cat’s paws, we recommend to let the product to dry for 5 minutes before letting your cat scratch on the treated scratching post.

In case of spillage, how can I clean the area?

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY liquid content could be removed with paper towel (to absorb) & a wet sponge on many surfaces. However, if splashed on a fabric material, this would need a more specific cleaning (washing machine if possible or the use of a cleaning product), as the colorant will have been absorbed by the fabric.  This is the reason why we advise on our information sheet to place down the scratching post horizontally on a sink or a newspaper before applying.

Will the color disappear after some time?

No. The blue taint of the product fades progressively after its application on the scratching post. This is the reason why it needs to be reapplied daily for the first days, to repeat the message to the cat. After a few days it is not visible on cardboard scratching posts and remains as light blue colour on rope scratching posts.
