Learn about FELIWAY CLASSIC Diffuser

How does it work?

Cats communicate through natural messages released in the air: “happy messages” (called feline facial pheromones).

When comfortable and happy, cats mark their territory as familiar by rubbing their face against corners, furniture, people, or other cats at home. By doing that, they release a message. When present in the environment, these “happy messages” provide calming and comfort to cats.

When modern life conflicts with their natural needs, cats can feel stressed and anxious. When stressed or anxious they do not mark their environment with these “happy messages” anymore and may pee outside the litter box, scratch or hide as a result.

FELIWAY CLASSIC provides “happy messages” to cats and makes them feel calm and comfortable at home. By mimicking the natural feline reassuring messages, FELIWAY helps cats happily adjust to pace of modern life, restores calm and may help decrease urine spraying, scratching and hiding.

How fast will I see results?

A lot of cat owners start to see results within the first 7 days with their cat. However, every cat is unique. Depending on how long the signs have been present and how severe the signs may be, it may take longer to see effects.

We recommend using FELIWAY CLASSIC continuously for at least 1 month.

How long should I use it?

Most of the cats will benefit from continued use of FELIWAY CLASSIC to create a happy environment in your home.

The minimum recommended duration is 1 month.

When to use?

  • To provide constant comfort to your cat at home
  • If your cat is urine spraying or peeing outside the litter box
  • If your cat shows signs of discomfort like hiding, reduced activity, reduced appetite, over-grooming
  • If you anticipate changes in your home (moving, renovation, redecorating, arrival of a new pet, arrival of a new family member)
  • It can be used with FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY if your cat is scratching walls or furniture, in multiple locations

Where to use?

  • In the room where the cat spends most of its time. Or where most of the urine spraying is occurring
  • It is ideal to have multiple diffusers if multiple rooms are affected

Where NOT to use?

  • Hallways: Cats spend very little of their time in hallways, so the efficacy would be weaker (Except if the hallway is in the room where urine marking or scratching happens most often)
  • Near litter box: Cats spend very little of their time near the litter box. FELIWAY is not a litter box attractant. (If the litter box is in the same room where your cat spends most of their time, it will not prevent your cat from using their litter box)

When NOT to use ?

  • If your cat is peeing, hiding or eating less for medical reasons, FELIWAY CLASSIC will not help. It is important to consult a veterinarian to rule out potential medical issues in your cat
  • Please make sure your cat has an adequate number of litter boxes (one box per cat, plus one) and that they are cleaned daily. FELIWAY CLASSIC will not help decrease urine spraying if clean litter boxes are not available to the cat
  • Scratching is a natural behavior of cats. Your cat should also have an easily accessible scratching post in the home. FELIWAY CLASSIC will not deter scratching if a scratching post is not provided. If your cat has conflict with another cat living in your home, we recommend using FELIWAY MulitCat instead
  • FELIWAY will not help in aggression towards the owners. In such situations, we recommend consulting your veterinarian or a behaviorist

Learn about FELIWAY MultiCat

How does it work?

Mother cats communicate with her kittens through natural messages released into the air. These "harmony messages" are called cat appeasing pheromones. These "harmony messages" helps maintain social bonds between cats of all ages.

FELIWAY MultiCat sends “harmony messages” to cats and restores harmony between cats living together. By mimicking the natural feline appeasing messages, FELIWAY MultiCat helps your cats live in harmony and avoid tension, conflict and fighting.

How fast will I see results?

Many cat owners start to see results within the first 7 days with their cats.
However, every cat is unique. Depending on how long the tension between cats has been present and how severe the conflict may be, it may take longer to see effects. We recommend using FELIWAY MultiCat continuously for at least 1 month.

How long should I use it?

Most of the cats living together will benefit from a continued use of FELIWAY Multicat to ensure harmony in your home. The minimum recommended duration is 1 month.

When to use?

  • If your have 2 or more cats living together and if they shows signs of tension like chasing, blocking, staring
  • If your cats living together are fighting, even if they have been fighting for a long time

Where to use?

  • In the room where the cats spends most of their time. This may require more than one diffuser if cats spend time in different rooms
  • Or in every room where tension or conflicts happen most often

Where NOT to use?

  • Hallways: Cats spend very little of their time in hallways
  • If conflict between cats frequently occurs in a hallway, distribution of the cats’ resources should also be reconsidered within the home, to make sure each cat has an easy and free access to litter box, food and water bowl, resting area, without being potentially blocked by another cat

When NOT to use ?

  • If your cats do not have access to an individual food bowl and litter box, competition will not resolve and the tension between your cats might continue
  • It will not help in case of tension or even aggression towards owners. In such situations, we recommend to consult your veterinarian or a behaviorist
  • If the conflict between your cats is associated to urine spraying or scratching in the home, both FELIWAY MultiCat and FELIWAY CLASSIC are recommended. The two diffusers should be plugged where cats spend most of their time. They can be plugged in the same room.

Use our FELIWAY Diffusers

Where to plug?

  • In an electric socket with a minimum clear distance above the diffuser of 5 ft. (The oily vapor carrying the FELIWAY messages rises in a column of warm air above the diffuser)
  • Each diffuser should be plugged into a separate outlet

Where NOT to plug?

  • It would block the diffusion if the Diffuser in plugged:
    • behind a door
    • underneath furniture
    • in any socket without 1,20 m clear above it
    • near a heat return or open window
  • In a multi-plug or multi-socket
  • With an adaptor
  • With an extension cord

How many do I need?

  • Use 1 diffuser for an area up to 700 sq. ft.
  • You may need to use more than one diffuser for a large or multi-floor home

How long will it last?

  • 1 refill lasts up to 30 days
    • It is recommended to replace the refill every 4 weeks. A small amount of liquid will remain in the vial (the vial will never be completely empty because the last few drops of liquid are not enough in contact with the wick to allow the diffusion process)
  • 1 diffuser heating unit lasts up to 6 months. Replace the heating unit every 6 months to ensure optimum diffusion of the product

How fast will it work?

  • It will take up to 24 hours for the room to become saturated with FELIWAY
  • For situations that can be anticipated, you should plug in the diffuser 2-3 days in advance to ensure thorough diffusion in the room

Unplug at night?

  • Don't unplug or switch off the diffuser at night.  It takes approximately 24 hours for a room to become saturated with FELIWAY® CLASSIC or FELIWAY® MultiCat.  If you unplug the diffuser you will never allow the pheromones to reach the amount needed in the environment to achieve clinical results.
  • Leave the diffuser on 24 hours a day. The clinical trials were performed with continuous use of the diffuser (24 hours a day) allowing the cat to constantly perceive the reassuring messages

Compatibility?

  • FELIWAY refills should only be used with a Ceva diffuser
  • FELIWAY Diffusers should never be used with a different companies refills
  • FELIWAY CLASSIC and FELIWAY MulitCat refills and diffusers are interchangeable
  • FELIWAY Diffusers come with a plug that fits with the local electric systems of the country they have been bought from. They cannot be used in a country with another voltage. They should never be used with an adapter or a voltage converter as it may lead to serious safety issues. Please check before use that your diffuser has the appropriate plug to be used in your country

Resolve FELIWAY Diffuser issues

How to check proper function of the diffuser?

When plugged into an outlet, the diffuser will get warm, indicating it is working properly.

The diffuser is warm

The diffuser contains a heating element that diffuses the product. It is designed to be warm to the touch.

The level of liquid is not going down

The diffusion of the liquid from the Diffuser is a very slow process. In normal conditions of use, it is difficult to see any change in the vial over the first week of use. Slight variations will occur depending on air turnover. To make sure your diffuser is working properly, check that:

  • the wick is not broken
  • the device is turned on all the time (sometimes an electrical outlet is controlled by a wall switch)
  • finally, try the device in a different electrical socket

Visible mark on your wall or furniture

The vapor (carrying FELIWAY “messages”) rises in a column of warm air above the diffuser. Sometimes the airflow in the room allows the vapor to re-condense and leave a visible mark. DON’T plug the diffuser  under any furniture or object protruding from the wall. There should be at least 5 ft of space above the diffuser.

Diffuser and air conditioning?

Be careful to plug the diffuser away from the air-conditioner, vents, cold air returns, or exhaust fan.

Diffuser and open windows?

Usage with open windows and doors may result in the product not staying within your home. The product also may not last the full expected 30 days. In such a case, a different diffuser location should be considered within the house, targeting the area where the cat spends most of its time.

For cats

All FELIWAY products are completely safe for cats when used as recommended.

FELIWAY products have been used by more than 11 million cats.

For kittens

All FELIWAY products are safe for kittens when used as recommended.

There is no minimum age for using any of the FELIWAY family of products.

Kittens are able to perceive “FELIWAY messages” released in the environment and respond accordingly.

For humans

FELIWAY is safe for humans when used as recommended.

FELIWAY “messages” are specific to cats. They are only perceived by other cats, not by people.

Diffusers comply with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), European Norms (EN) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL ) required standards. The plastic materials used are self-extinguishing (V2 grade).

When the diffuser is used continuously, we recommend replacing the diffuser after 6 months of use.

For dogs

FELIWAY is safe for dogs when used as recommended.

FELIWAY “messages” are specific to cats. They are only perceived by other cats, not by dogs.

For caged birds

Some caged birds are known to have sensitive respiratory systems (in particular Psittacines: parrots, budgerigar, etc.). If you are using FELIWAY CLASSIC or FELIWAY MultiCat we recommend not using a diffuser in the same room as where the bird is housed.

For aquarium fish

FELIWAY is safe for fishes when used as recommended.

As a precaution, we recommend not using a diffuser in the same room as the aquarium. If the cat spends most of their time in the room with the aquarium, we recommend using an outlet as far from the aquarium as possible. We recommend using a cover over the aquarium. This is a precaution to avoid oily, diffused active ingredients settling on the surface of the water. The components themselves are not classified as toxic for the environment.

Learn about FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY

How does it work?

Cats communicate with other cats through natural messages left in their territory. When they scratch an object in their territory they leave a "territory message". This provides a visual messages (scratch marks) and the "territory message" saying that "this is mine".

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY sends “territory messages” to cats and directs them to scratch where the product is applied. By mimicking the natural feline territorial messages, FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY is a simple answer to your cat’s inappropriate scratching in the home.

How fast will I see results?

Most owners see results within the first 7 days. However, to achieve the full effect and help redirect the cat’s behavior it’s recommended to use the full 4 week treatment protocol for the scratching post.

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY is proven to effectively redirect unwanted scratching in the home.

How long should I use it?

To achieve the full effect and help redirect the cat’s behavior, it’s recommended to use the full 4 week treatment protocol for the scratching post. How to apply: use once daily for 7 days, then 1 pipette at the beginning of week 3 and 1 pipette at the beginning of week 4. Repeat FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY application daily during the first week to help reinforce the message to the cat and modify their scratching habits. Then, the further weekly applications contribute to maintain the change.

If your cat has been scratching for a long time, we recommend using FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY combined with FELIWAY CLASSIC Spray. Apply FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY to the scratching post according the protocol. Apply the FELIWAY CLASSIC Spray to the areas where your cat is inappropriately scratching. Repeat spray application daily until the inappropriate scratching is resolved.

When to use?

  • When adopting a new cat or kitten, to prevent inappropriate scratching in the home
  • When you want to attract your cat to scratch on a scratching post, even if it’s a post your cat has previously ignored
  • When your cat is scratching in unwanted locations in your home, even if it has been so for a very long time.
  • When stressful changes at home are anticipated
  • When getting a new scratching post

Where to use?

On your cat’s scratching post. Scratching post suggestions:

  • As close as possible to the item currently scratched inappropriately by the cat
  • Near a favorite napping location
  • Near a window or door
  • Do not place the post behind furniture or in a corner
  • The post should not wobble and be tall enough to allow your cat to fully stretch while scratching
  • We recommend using vertical scratching posts with FELISCRATCH. Using a vertical post helps communicate the pheromonal message to the cats and redirects their scrataching behavior

Where NOT to use?

  • On the areas where you don’t want your cat to scratch, like furniture and walls (use FELIWAY CLASSIC Spray on these areas)
  • We do not recommend scratching posts that are hung on the door or just leaning against the wall

Use FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY

How to apply?

To avoid potential spillage on fabrics, furniture or carpets, lay your scratching post over a sink or on a newspaper as a precaution. Slowly apply the liquid product by drawing 2 or 3 vertical lines on the post.

Allow to dry for 5 minutes and place the scratching post preferably close to the area where your cat scratches. A second option is where they usually rest.

How many do I need?

  • If you have 1 cat: offer 1 scratching post treated with FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY
  • If you have 2 or more cats: offer several posts, ideally one per cat. For best results apply FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY to each scratching post according to the treatment protocol

When should I reuse?

  • When introducing a new scratching post in your home
  • When replacing or introducing a new scratching post
  • When stressful changes at home are anticipated

Why is my cat licking the product on the scratching post?

A few cats have been reported to lick the post treated with FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY, usually also rubbing their face intensely on the post. This is due to the presence of catnip in the product. This typically occurs within the first few days of use, if i twill occur at all.

There is no risk to your cat associated with licking the product.

Why is the product colored?

Blue colorant provides that visual cue to provide a long range attractant for the cat to investigate the scratching post and then promote the detection of the “territory messages”.

Will the color stain on my cat's paws?

This has not been reported in our field trials. To prevent any chance for possible staining on your cat’s paws, we recommend to let the product to dry for 5 minutes before letting your cat scratch on the treated scratching post.

In case of spillage, how can I clean the area?

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY liquid may be removed from most surfaces with the use of paper towel (to absorb) and a wet sponge. If splashed on fabric, the use of a laundry stain remover (Tide To Go Stain Remover Pen) and regular laundering may be necessary.

Always spot check the compatibility of any cleaning product in an inconspicuous location on material prior to use. Remove any spilled FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY liquid immediately as drying may set stain. To avoid accidental spills, follow all application instructions including placing the scratching post down on newspaper or over sink before applying product. Specialty cleaning products may be needed for some porous surfaces or upholstery.

Will the color disappear after some time?

No the color will not disappear but will fade over time. This is the reason why it needs to be reapplied daily for the first days. Depending on the scratching post it may be very hard to see after 4 weeks or may still be visible as a light blue color on the post.
