How to Use FELIWAY® Optimum, Classic or Multicat Diffusers

Where to plug the diffuser?

Plug into a properly functioning electrical outlet that has a clear space above it of at least 4 ft (the oily vapor that carries the FELIWAY messages rise above the diffuser as a column of warm air).

Where NOT to plug in the diffuser?

To ensure the proper delivery of the pheromone messages, do not plug in the diffuser:

  • behind a door
  • under furniture
  • in any socket that does not have a clear space of 1.20m above it.

To ensure that the diffuser works properly, it should not be connected:

  • in a multi-plug or multi-outlet adapter adapter
  • with an international adapter
  • in an extension lead.

How many diffusers do I need?

Use 1 diffuser for an area up to 700sq ft.


For a large house, or a house with several floors, use several diffusers.

How long does the diffuser work for?

1 refill lasts up to 30 days. It is recommended to replace the refill every 4 weeks, even if there is a small amount of liquid left inside the vial (the vial can never be completely empty as the last drops of liquid are not in sufficient contact with the wick to allow diffusion to occur)

With continuous use, a diffuser lasts 6 months. Replace the diffuser after every six months of continuous use to ensure optimum effectiveness.

How long does it take for the diffuser to work?

Within 24 hours, the diffuser will be fully functional and FELIWAY® calming messages will spread throughout your home.

Should I unplug the diffuser at night?

Do not unplug or turn off the diffuser at night.

It is best to leave the diffuser on all the time. Clinical trials show that the diffuser is effective when used continuously (24 hours a day) as this allows your cat to continuously perceive the “calming messages” of FELIWAY®.

Compatibility

FELIWAY® refills should never be used with any other electrical device.

FELIWAY® Diffusers should never be used with any other refill from another company.

FELIWAY® Diffusers are supplied with a plug that is compatible with the local electricity supply of the country in which they were purchased. They cannot be used in a country with a different standard voltage. They should never be used with an adapter or a voltage converter as this can lead to serious safety issues.

Before use, please check that your diffuser has the correct plug for use in your country.

Only use in properly functioning 230-240V electrical sockets.

Recycling?

The refills are made of recyclable plastic material (PET).

The cardboard box can be recycled with your usual paper waste.

This product is covered by the European Directive 2002/96/EC on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE): WEE/HG0312WZ.

Shelf life?

The shelf life of the refills is 36 months (the expiration date is shown on the packaging).

How can I check the diffuser is working?

When plugged into an electrical socket, the diffuser will gradually heat up, indicating that it is working properly.

The diffuser is hot

The diffuser contains a heating element that diffuses the product, so is designed to be warm to the touch.

The liquid level is not going down

The level is going down, but you can’t see it !


The diffusion of the liquid from the Diffuser is a very slow process. When used normally it is difficult to see any change in the vial during the first week of use. Slight variations will occur depending on air turnover.

To check that your diffuser is working properly, make sure that:

  • the wick is not broken
  • the device is left turned on (sometimes an electrical outlet is controlled by a wall switch)
  • finally, try the device in a different electrical socket.

There is a visible mark on my wall or furniture

The oily vapors (which carry the FELIWAY® “calming messages”) rise above the diffuser in a column of warm air. If this air column is blocked (e.g. under a shelf, table or furniture) the oil may re-condense, leaving a visible stain.


DO NOT plug the diffuser under any furniture or object that protrudes from the wall.

Use of diffuser and air conditioning?

Be sure to plug the diffuser away from air conditioners, vents, drafts or air extractors. This may result in diffusion at a faster rate and the product may not last the expected 30 days.

Use of diffuser and open windows?

Using the diffuser in a very well ventilated room (e.g. open windows and doors) may result in diffusion at a faster rate. This may result in the product running out before the expected 30 days. In this situation, consider placing the diffuser elsewhere in the house, targeting the area where your dog spends the most time.

How fast will I see results?

Many cat owners start to see results for their cat within the first 7 days of use. However, all cats are different. The first signs of improvement may come later depending on the duration and severity of the signs of stress. We recommend using FELIWAY® Optimum for a period of at least 1 month, and ideally use it continuously for enhanced serenity.

How long should I use it for?

FELIWAY® Optimum sends a message of enhanced serenity to your cat. Most cats benefit from the continued use of FELIWAY® Optimum to create a pleasant environment in your home. The minimum recommended duration of use is 1 month.

When should I use it?

Our modern lifestyles are sometimes incompatible with the needs of our cats (e.g. busy schedules, changes in environment and routine). FELIWAY® Optimum can be used to reassure your cat at home constantly. FELIWAY® Optimum can also help in the following situations:
* If your cat is urine spraying, scratching walls or furniture
* If your cat shows signs of stress such as hiding, reduced activity or appetite, or overgrooming
* If you are anticipating changes to your home (e.g. moving house, renovations, redecorating your home, or arrival of a new pet or person into the household)
* If you have two or more cats living with you and they show signs of tension (e.g. chasing, blocking, staring)
* If your cats living together are fighting, even if they have been for some time.

Where should I use it?

In the room where your cat spends the most of their time.

Where NOT to use it?

  • In hallways: cats spend very little time in hallways, so the efficacy would be reduced if used here.
  • Near the litter box: cats spend very little time near their litter tray, so the efficacy would be reduced if used here (if the litter box is in the room where your cat spends the most time, there is no problem plugging it in this room).

When shouldn't I use it?

If your cat is urinating, hiding or has a lack of appetite for medical reasons, FELIWAY® Optimum will not help. It is important to consult a vet to rule out any potential medical issues. It is important to ensure your cat has access to an adequate number of appropriately placed resources.

  • If your cat does not have access to a clean litter box, they will urinate in your home and FELIWAY® Optimum will not help this.
  • If your cat does not have access to a scratching post, they will scratch your walls or furniture (as scratching is a basic need for cats) and FELIWAY® Optimum will not help.
  • FELIWAY® Optimum will not help in cases of tension or even aggression towards owners. In such situations, we recommend consulting your vet or a qualified animal behaviorist.
  • If you have several cats and they do not each have access to their own food/water bowls and litter tray etc, competition for resources remains and tension between your cats will continue.

How does it works?

When cats feel comfortable and happy, they mark their territory by rubbing their face against corners, furniture, people or other cats at home. By doing this they release a message. When they find these "happy messages" in their environment, cats feel reassured.

How fast will I see results?

How long should I use it?

Most cats will benefit from FELIWAY® Classic being used continuously to create a pleasant environment in your home.

When should I use it?

  • To comfort your cat in your home
  • If your cat shows stress-related signs, such as urine marking and scratching on walls or furniture that appear in many places
  • If your cat shows signs that indicate they are not completely happy (e.g. hiding, low activity, lack of appetite, excessive grooming, etc.)
  • If you are planning to make changes in your home (moving, renovation, redecoration, arrival of a new pet, arrival of a new family member...).

In the room where your cat spends the most of their time.

Where NOT to use it?

  • In hallways: cats spend very little time in hallways, so the efficacy would be reduced if used here.
  • Near the litter box: cats spend very little time near their litter box, so the efficacy would be reduced if used here (if the litter box is in the room where your cat spends the most time, there is no problem plugging it in this room).

When NOT to use it?

If your cat is urinating, hiding or has a lack of appetite for medical reasons, FELIWAY® Classic will not help. It is important to consult a vet to rule out any potential medical issues. It is important to ensure your cat has access to an adequate number of appropriately placed resources.

  • If your cat does not have access to a clean litter box, they will urinate in your home and FELIWAY Classic will not help this.
  • If your cat does not have access to a scratching post, it will scratch your walls or furniture (as scratching is a basic need for cats) and FELIWAY® Classic will not help.
  • If your cat does not get along with another cat living in the same household, we recommend using FELIWAY Optimum instead.
  • FELIWAY® will not help if there is tension or even aggression towards the owners. In such situations, we recommend that you consult your vet or an animal behaviorist.

How does it work?

After birth, the mother cat sends "harmony messages" to her kittens. When these messages (scientifically called pheromones) are released in the mammary area, they help to ensure that the kittens bond.

  • If cats living together are fighting, even if this has been going on for some time.

Where should I use it?

In the room where the cats spend the most time. If this is different for each cat you may need to use multiple diffusers.

Where NOT to use it?

  • In hallways: cats spend very little time in hallways, so the efficacy would be reduced if used here.
    If conflict between your cats often occurs in a hallway, consider the distribution of resources within your home to ensure that each cat has easy and free access to their litter tray, food and water bowls and resting areas without another cat possibly blocking their path.

When NOT to use it?

  • If your cats do not have access to an individual food bowl and litter tray, competition will not resolve and tensions may increase.
  • FELIWAY® MultiCat will not help if there is tension or even aggression towards the owners. In such situations, we recommend that you consult your vet or an animal behaviorist.
  • If the conflict between your cats is accompanied by urine spraying or scratching inside your home, we recommend using FELIWAY® Optimum.

How long should I use it?

  • When you are travelling: if necessary, repeat application every 4 to 5 hours during long journeys.

When should I use it?

  • If you plan to travel with your cat, spray FELIWAY® Classic Spray in the carrier 15 minutes beforehand.
  • If you plan to take your cat to the vet, spray FELIWAY® Classic Spray in the carrier 15 minutes beforehand.
  • If your cat shows signs of discomfort during travel, such as vomiting, urination, defecation etc, but also meowing, agitation and salivation.
  • If your cat shows signs of stress at home, such as urine spraying and scratching on walls or furniture in targeted areas.

Where should I use it?

  • When you are travelling: spray directly on bedding, inside the carrier or in the car, 15 minutes before your cat has access to these areas
  • When at home: spray once or twice a day on areas where your cat urinates or scratches (such as the sofa, chairs, door frames, doors,...), ideally after cleaning those areas.

Where NOT to use it?

  • Never spray directly on to your cat.
  • Never spray in the carrier if your cat is inside.
    After spraying the product, you must wait 15 minutes before allowing your cat access to the area.
  • Do not spray your scratching post as this will deter your cat from using it.

When NOT to use it?

For motion sickness:

  • FELIWAY® Classic Spray is not indicated for motion sickness during a car journey. For this reason, we recommend that you do not feed your cat for at least 6 hours before travel to avoid nausea and vomiting. However, you should not limit access to water beforehand.

    When at home:
  • If your cat does not have access to a clean litter tray, it will urinate in your home and FELIWAY® Classic Spray will not help.
  • If your cat does not have access to a scratching post, it will scratch your walls or furniture (as scratching is a basic need for cats) and FELIWAY® Classic Spray will not help.
  • If your cat is urinating, hiding or has a lack of appetite for medical reasons, FELIWAY® Classic Spray will not help. It is important to consult a vet to rule out any potential medical issues.
  • FELIWAY® will not be of any use in cases of tension or even aggression towards the owners. In such situations, we recommend that you consult your veterinarian or an animal behaviorist.

How much should I use?

  • Spray 8 to 10 sprays for each application.

A 20 ml bottle contains about 16 sprays and a 60 ml bottle contains about 50 sprays.

How long does the spray work for?

The effects of the spray last between 4 and 5 hours. Each cat may react slightly differently.

Recycling?

FELIWAY® Classic Spray bottles are made from recyclable plastics.

Shelf life?

Once opened, the product can be used until the expiry date on the bottle.

FELIWAY®  Safety

For cats

All FELIWAY® products are safe for cats. FELIWAY® products have been used by more than 14 million cats worldwide.

No problems have been identified from clinical trials and numerous consumer surveys.

For kittens

FELIWAY® is safe for kittens. There is no minimum age for using FELIWAY®. Kittens are able to perceive the "FELIWAY® messages" that are released into their environment and can respond accordingly.

For humans

FELIWAY® is completely harmless to humans. FELIWAY® "messages" are specific to cats. They are therefore only perceived by cats and are undetectable by humans.

Our diffusers comply with the standards established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), by laboratories authorised to issue a certificate of conformity to safety standards (Underwriters Laboratories, UL) as well as European standards (EN). The plastic materials used are self-extinguishing (class V2).

When the diffuser is used continuously, we recommend changing it every 6 months for best results.

The diffuser contains a heating element that diffuses the product, so is designed to be warm to the touch.

For Dogs

FELIWAY® is completely harmless to dogs. FELIWAY® "messages" are specific to cats. They are therefore only perceived by cats and are undetectable by dogs.

For caged birds

Some species of caged birds are known to have sensitive respiratory systems (particularly those in the psittacine family: parrots, parakeets, etc.). Therefore, if you are using a FELIWAY® diffuser (FELIWAY® Optimum, FELIWAY Classic, FELIWAY® MultCat or FELIWAY® Help!), we recommend that you plug it in another room as a precaution.

For aquarium fish

FELIWAY® is completely harmless to fish. However, if you are using a FELIWAY® diffuser (FELIWAY® Optimum, FELIWAY® Classic, FELIWAY® MultiCat or FELIWAY® Help!) as for any diffuser device, we recommend plugging the diffuser in room without an aquarium as a precautionary measure.

If your cat spends most of their time in the room where the aquarium is located, we recommend that you use the socket furthest away from the aquarium. This precautionary measure is intended to prevent the oily carrier from settling on the surface of the water. The components themselves are not classified as environmentally hazardous.
