Learn about FELIWAY CLASSIC Diffuser

How does it work?

Cats communicate through natural messages released in the air: “happy messages” (scientifically called pheromones).
When comfortable and happy, cats mark their territory as familiar by rubbing their face against corners, furniture, people, or other cats at home. By doing that, they release a message. When present in the environment, these “happy messages” provide reassurance to the cats.
When modern life conflicts with their natural needs, cats don’t feel completely comfortable.
They do not release these “happy messages” anymore and show signs like urine spraying, scratching and hiding.
FELIWAY CLASSIC sends “happy messages” to cats and makes them completely feel good at home.
Using feline natural reassuring messages, FELIWAY helps your cat happily adjust to the pace of modern life, restores full happiness and avoids signs like urine spraying, scratching and hiding.

How fast will I see results?

A lot of cat owners start to see results within the first 7 days with their cat.
However, every cat is unique. Depending on how long the signs have been present and how severe the signs may be, it may take longer to see effects. We recommend using FELIWAY CLASSIC for at least 1 month.

How long should I use it?

Most cats will benefit from permanent use of FELIWAY CLASSIC to create a happy environment in your home. The minimum recommended duration is 1 month.

When to use?

  • To constantly comfort your cat at home
  • If your cat shows signs like urine spraying, scratching walls or furnitures, in multiple locations
  • If your cat shows signs of discomfort like hiding, reduced activity, reduced appetite, over grooming
  • If you anticipate changes in your home (moving home, renovation, redecorating, arrival of a new pet, arrival of a new family member, etc.)

Where to use?

  • In the room where the cat spends most of its time
  • Or in every room where scratching or urine spraying happen most often.

Where NOT to use?

  • Hallways: Cats spend very little of their time in hallways, so the efficacy would be weaker.(Except if the hallway is the room where scratching or urine marking happen most often)
  • Near litter box: cats spend very little of their time near litter box, so the efficacy would be weaker. (If the litter box is in the same room where your cat spends most of his time, it will not prevent your cat from using its litter box)

When NOT to use ?

  • If your cat has no access to a clean litter tray, it will pee in your home, and FELIWAY CLASSIC will not help.
  • If your cat has no access to a scratching post, it will scratch your walls or furniture (because scratching is an essential need of cats), and FELIWAY CLASSIC will not help.
  • If your cat is peeing, hiding or eating less for medical reasons, FELIWAY CLASSIC will not help.It is important to consult a veterinarian to rule out potential medical issues in your cat.
  • If your cat has conflict with another cat living in your home, we recommend using FELIWAY FRIENDS instead
  • FELIWAY will not help in case of tension or even aggression towards owners. In such situations, we recommend to consult your veterinarian or a behaviourist.

Learn about FELIWAY FRIENDS Diffuser

How does it work?

After the mother gives birth, she sends “harmony messages” to her kittens. These messages (scientifically called pheromones), released in the mammary zone, are naturally appeasing and ensure harmony between the kittens.

FELIWAY FRIENDS sends “harmony messages” to cats and restores harmony between cats living together. Using feline natural appeasing messages, FELIWAY FRIENDS helps your cats live in harmony and avoids tensions, conflicts and fighting.

How fast will I see results?

Many cat owners start to see results within the first 7 days with their cats.
However, every cat is unique. Depending on how long the tension between cats has been present and how severe the conflict may be, it may take longer to see effects. We recommend using FELIWAY FRIENDS for at least 1 month.

How long should I use it?

Most cats living together will benefit from permanent use of FELIWAY FRIENDS to ensure harmony in your home. The minimum recommended duration is 1 month.

When to use?

  • If you have 2 or more cats living together, and if they shows signs of tension like chasing, blocking, staring.
  • If your cats living together are fighting, even if they have been fighting for a long time.

Where to use?

  • In the room where the cats spend most of their time.
  • Or in every room where tension or conflicts happen most often.

Where NOT to use?

Hallways: Cats spend very little of their time in hallways, so the efficacy would be weaker.
If conflict between cats frequently occurs in a hallway, distribution of the cats’ resources should also be reconsidered within the home, to make sure each cat has an easy and free access to litter box, food and water bowl, resting area, without being potentially blocked by another cat.

When NOT to use ?

  • If your cats do not have access to individual food bowls and litter boxes, competition will not resolve and the tension between your cats might continue
  • FELIWAY FRIENDS will not help in case of tension or even aggression towards owners. In such situations, we recommend to consult your veterinarian or a behaviourist.
  • If the conflict between your cats is associated with urine spraying or scratching in the home, both FELIWAY FRIENDS and FELIWAY CLASSIC are recommended. The two diffusers should be plugged where cats spend most of their time and can be plugged in the same room.

Use our FELIWAY Diffusers

Where to plug?

  • In an electric socket with a minimum clear distance above the diffuser of 1.20 m (4 ft)
    • The oil-based vapour carrying the FELIWAY messages rises in a column of warm air above the diffuser
  • In an outlet of its own

Where NOT to plug?

  • It would block the diffusion if the Diffuser is plugged:
    • behind a door
    • underneath furniture
    • in any socket without 1.20 m (4 ft) clear distance above it
  • In a multi-plug or multi-socket
  • With an adaptor
  • With an extension cord

How many do I need?

Use 1 diffuser for an area up to 70m² (750 sq ft).

Use several diffusers for a large home, or for  a multi-floor home.

How long will it last?

  • Each refill lasts up to 30 days
    • It is recommended to replace the refill every 4 weeks, even if  a small amount of liquid remains in the bottle
    • The bottle can never be completely empty because the last few drops of liquid are not enough in contact with the wick to allow the diffusion process
  • Each diffuser lasts 6 months
    • Replace the Diffuser device every 6 months to ensure optimum effect

How fast will it work?

In 24 hours, the Diffuser will be fully functional and FELIWAY will spread in your home.
For situations that can be anticipated, you should plug in the Diffuser 2-3 days in advance.

Unplug at night?

Do not unplug or turn off power to the diffuser at night (e.g., if the outlet is controlled by a light switch).

Leave the diffuser on 24 hours a day. That’s how efficacy is proven in clinical trials with continuous use of the diffuser (24 hours a day) allowing the cat to constantly perceive the reassuring messages.

Compatibility?

  • FELIWAY Refills should never be used with another plug-in device.
  • FELIWAY Diffusers should never be used with another refill.
  • FELIWAY CLASSIC and FELIWAY FRIENDS Refills and Diffusers are compatible
  • FELIWAY Diffusers come with a plug that fits with the local electrical systems of the country they have been bought from.
    • They cannot be used in a country with another voltage.

    • Please check before use that your diffuser has the appropriate plug to be used in your country.

Recycling?

The refills are made of recyclable plastic material (PET).

Shelf life?

Refill expiration date is listed on the packaging.

We recommend to replace diffusers after 6 months.

Resolve FELIWAY Diffuser issues

How to check proper function of the Diffuser?

When plugged into an outlet, the diffuser will get warm, indicating it is working properly.

The diffuser is warm

The diffuser contains a heating element that diffuses the product, so is designed to be warm to the touch.

The level of liquid is not going down

It is going down, but you can’t see it!

The diffusion of the liquid from the Diffuser is a very slow process. In normal conditions of use, it is difficult to see any change in the bottle over the first week of use. Slight variations will occur depending on air turnover.

To make sure your diffuser is working properly, check that:

  • the wick is not broken
  • the device is turned on all the time (sometimes an electrical outlet is controlled by a wall switch)
  • finally, try the device in a different electrical socket

Visible mark on your wall or furniture

The oil-based vapour (carrying FELIWAY “messages”) rises in a column of warm air above the diffuser.

If this rising air is blocked (e.g. under a shelf, table, furniture) the oil may re-condense and leave a visible mark.

DO NOT plug the diffuser under any furniture or object protruding from the wall. Minimum clear distance above diffuser = 1.20 m or 4 ft.

Diffuser and air conditioning?

Be careful to plug the diffuser away from the air-conditioner, vents, cold air returns, or exhaust fan.

Diffuser and open windows?

Usage with open windows and doors may result in diffusion at a faster rate. The product may not last the full expected 30 days. In such a case, a different diffuser location should be considered within the house, targeting the area where the cat spends most of its time.

All FELIWAY products are completely safe for cats.

FELIWAY products have been used by more than 11 million cats.

No issues were observed during trials and extensive consumer surveys.

For kittens

FELIWAY is completely safe for kittens.

There is no minimum age for using FELIWAY. Kittens are able to perceive “FELIWAY  messages” released in the environment and respond accordingly.

For humans

FELIWAY is completely safe for humans.

FELIWAY “messages” are specific to cats. So they are only perceived by other cats, not by people.

Our Diffusers comply with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), European Norms (EN) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL ) required standards. The plastic materials used are self-extinguishing (V2 grade).

When the diffuser is used continuously, we recommend to replace it every 6 months for the best results.

For dogs

FELIWAY is completely safe for dogs.

FELIWAY “messages” are specific to cats. So they are only perceived by other cats, not by dogs.

For caged birds

Some caged birds are known to have sensitive respiratory systems (in particular Psittacines: parrots, budgerigar, etc.). Therefore, if you are using FELIWAY CLASSIC or FELIWAY FRIENDS Diffuser, as a precaution, we recommend plugging in the diffuser in a different room.

For aquarium fish

FELIWAY is completely safe for fish.

As for any in-home diffuser, if you are using FELIWAY CLASSIC or FELIWAY FRIENDS Diffuser, as a precaution, we recommend plugging in the diffuser in a room that does not have an aquarium.

If your cat spends most of its time in the room with the aquarium, we recommend using an outlet as far from the aquarium as possible. This is only a precaution to avoid oily, diffused active ingredients settling on the surface of the water. The components themselves are not classified as toxic for the environment.

Learn about FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY

How does it work?

Cats are territorial by nature. They like to feel in control of their territory. They have their own way of telling other cats “this is mine”! They scratch in visible places and leave marks and “territory messages”, coming from their paws.

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY sends “territory messages” to cats and encourages them to scratch where you prefer, like on a scratching post.

Using feline natural territorial messages, FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY is a simple answer to your cat’s inappropriate scratching in the home.

How fast will I see results?

From 7 days after initial daily application. It’s recommended to use it until the end of the 4 week period as the benefits continue over weeks.

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY is proven to effectively redirect unwanted scratching in the home (displayed on vertical and horizontal surfaces).

How long should I use it?

It’s recommended to use the full series of applications over the 4-week application period:

  • 1 pipette daily for the first 7 days, then
  • 1 pipette at the beginning of week 3, and
  • 1 pipette at the beginning of week 4

For a total of 9 pipettes (1 sachet) per scratching post.

Repeat FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY application daily during the first week to help reinforce the message to the cat and modify their scratching habits. Then, the further weekly applications contribute to maintain the change.

After using FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY, if no improvement is seen at the end of week 2 (for instance for cats already scratching for a long time), apply in addition FELIWAY CLASSIC Spray on the unwanted scratched areas, after cleaning them with warm water and allowing them to dry. Repeat spray application daily until resolution of scratching.

When to use?

  • When adopting a new kitten, to prevent inappropriate scratching in the home due to the change in living environment.
  • When you want to attract your cat to scratch on a scratching post, even if it’s a post your cat has previously ignored
  • When your cat is scratching in unwanted locations in your home, even if it has been so for a very long time, and even if your cat has outdoors access
  • When stressful changes at home are anticipated
  • When replacing a scratching post or introducing a new post in the home

Where to use?

On your cat’s scratching post:

  • Place the post in a visible area, near a favorite napping location, since cats enjoy a good stretch and scratch after awakening. As close as possible to the item currently scratched inappropriately by the cat.
  • Do not place the post behind furniture or in a corner,
  • The post should be sturdy and stable, and tall enough = at least 90 cm (3 ft)
  • We recommend using only vertical scratching posts (made of cardboard or rope).Using a vertical post helps communicate the pheromonal message to the cats and encourage them to mark with their claws.

Where NOT to use?

  • On the areas where you DON'T want your cat to scratch, like furniture, walls
    • Use FELIWAY CLASSIC Spray on these areas to help prevent unwanted scratching
  • On a scratching pad put onto the floor
  • On a scratching pad hidden behind furniture
  • On a scratching post not steady enough
    • For example, hung on the door or just put against the wall without being attached

When NOT to use?

  • If your cat is scratching in undesirable locations outside the home, FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY will not help
  • If your cat is scratching in several different places in the home, not always the same, it’s probably a sign that your cat is not completely happy. In that case, it’s recommended to also plug a FELIWAY CLASSIC diffuser in the room where the cat spends most of its time, to provide additional comfort. Begin using FELIWAY CLASSIC diffuser at the same time as FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY, and for at least 1 month.
  • FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY will not help in case of scratching directed towards owners. In such situations, we recommend to consult your veterinarian or a behaviourist.

Use FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY

How to apply?

To avoid potential spillage on fabrics, furniture or carpets, place down your scratching post on a sink or a newspaper as a precaution, and slowly apply the liquid product by drawing 2 or 3 lines on the post that will mimic the natural lacerations left by cats on a scratching post.

Allow to dry for 5 minutes and install the post vertically, preferably close to the area where your cat scratches, or where they usually rest.

You don’t need to apply when your cat is present, FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY is appealing enough to make cats scratch on the post even if applied in the absence of the cats.

How many do I need?

  • If you have 1 cat: offer 1 scratching post treated with FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY
  • If you have 2 or more cats: offer several posts, ideally one per cat, and apply FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY on each of them to encourage cats to use them
  • NOTE : Each package of FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY contains 1 full 4-week series of applications for 1 scratching post

When should I renew application?

  • When introducing a new scratching post in your home
  • When replacing your cat’s scratching post
  • When stressful changes at home are anticipated

Why is my cat licking the product on the scratching post?

A few cats have been reported to lick the post treated with FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY, usually also rubbing their face intensely on the post. This is due to the presence of catnip in the product. Some cats may look very aroused. This has mostly been observed during the first days of use of the product, and no more during the next weeks.

In any case, there is no risk linked to the oral consumption of a minimal quantity of product after licking it.

Why is the product blue in colour?

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY contains a blue colourant to mimic the visual marks (lacerations) of cat scratches.

The colourant is dark blue to be easily visible from far by your cat and attract them to the post, so they can detect of the “territory messages” in the product.

Will the blue colour stain my cat's paws?

This has not been reported in our field trials. To prevent any chance for possible staining on your cat’s paws, we recommend to let the product to dry for 5 minutes before letting your cat scratch on the treated scratching post.

In case of spillage, how can I clean the area?

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY liquid content is washable with paper towel (to absorb) and a wet sponge on many surfaces. However, if splashed on a fabric material, this would need a more specific cleaning (washing machine if possible or use of a cleaning product), as the colorant will have been absorbed by the fabric. This is the reason why we advise on our insert to place down the scratching post on a sink or a newspaper before applying.

Will the blue colour disappear after some time?

No the colour will not disappear but it will fade over time. The blue taint of the product fades progressively after its application on the scratching post. This is the reason why it needs to be reapplied daily for the first days, to repeat the message to the cat. It’s no longer visible on cardboard scratching posts after a few days and remains as light blue on rope scratching posts.
